What is Penile Implant Surgery

A penile implant, also known as a penile prosthesis, is a surgical gold standard curative treatment for ED. In contrast to breast implants, a penile implant is not a size augmentation procedure and is used specifically and solely to restore erectile function in men with ED. This surgery does not affect sensation and will preserve a man’s orgasmic ability. This brief, under 30 minute (when performed by us!), surgical procedure has a number of important benefits, including a completely concealed device that looks and feels natural, and the recovery of essentially spontaneous sexual activity.

At Men’s Health Manhattan we have significant experience and have a proven track record of excellent surgical outcomes for implant surgery. In implant surgery, training, experience and an intimate knowledge of the medical literature matters. Our patients benefit from our unsurpassed surgical success rates. Frequently Asked Questions about Penile Implant Surgery

What is penile implant surgery?

Penile implant surgery, also known as penile prosthesis surgery, is a medical procedure designed to treat erectile dysfunction. It involves the surgical placement of a device within the penis that enables men to achieve and maintain an erection suitable for sexual activity. The implant consists of inflatable cylinders, a fluid-filled reservoir, and a pump, all of which are discreetly implanted within the body. This is completely invisible from the outside, and does not affect a man’s sensation. It is important to note that this is not used to increase patient size.

Who is a candidate for penile implant surgery?

Candidates for penile implant surgery are typically men who have tried other treatments for erectile dysfunction without success, such as medications or injections, or are men who are unhappy with or tired of using medications each time they are interested in sexual activity. It is considered for those with persistent, severe ED that significantly impacts their quality of life. A thorough evaluation with us is important to determine if someone is a suitable candidate for this surgical intervention.

What are the different types of penile implants?

There are two main types of penile implants: inflatable and semi-rigid/malleable. The most commonly placed implants are the inflatable penile implants. Inflatable implants consist of two inflatable cylinders, a reservoir, and a pump, allowing for a more natural erection. Malleable implants, on the other hand, maintain a constant firmness but can be manually positioned for intimacy. We help to guide people through this decision process to provide for the best possible surgical option and outcome.

What is the recovery process like after penile implant surgery?

Recovery from penile implant surgery involves a period of rest and limited physical activity. Most often, people will go home on the day of their surgery. Patients are advised to refrain from sexual activity for a couple of weeks to allow for proper healing. Follow-up appointments are important to monitor progress and address any concerns
